HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOUSE BUILD PROJECT
The
Atlanta Consular Corps is made up of 22
career and 41 honorary consular offices.
Career officials are members of their
country's foreign service while honorary
officials are local residents appointed
by foreign governments to perform
consular duties. The Dean of the
Consular Corps, currently the Honorable
Carlos Layus, Consul General for
Argentina, is the career official with
the longest tenure in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Consular Corps decided last
year to contribute in a philanthropic
way to the jurisdiction in which we
reside and are so well-received and
supported - the City of Atlanta and the
State of Georgia. This has taken the
form of a volunteer project to build a
'Consular Corps House', under the
auspices of Habitat for Humanity
Atlanta. For the past twelve months an
effort has been underway to raise the
$75,000 in cash required of any
interested party by Habitat to secure
approval for a building project. To
date, $63,000 of this requirement has
been met, through the generous donations
of individuals and corporations. The
small balance outstanding continues to
be actively sought and the support of
BABG members is encouraged and welcomed.
Based on the positive results of this
fund raising effort, we are pleased to
inform you that the Atlanta Consular
Corps has obtained agreement from
Habitat for Humanity to proceed with
plans to build a house in the Atlanta
area this Autumn (the exact location is
yet to be determined). Seven consecutive
Saturdays beginning October 25 and
continuing to December 13 are now being
scheduled. 40 volunteers per Saturday
are required, and of course people may
volunteer for more than one Saturday.
Absolutely no experience is required.
The purpose of this message is to seek
out and register volunteers for this
exciting project. Commitments would be
welcome from yourself, your company
staffs and your family members.
Attached, please find a self-explanatory
registration form. We would ask you to
distribute it to your employees,
families and networks, encouraging
people to volunteer by filling out and
returning the form to the logistics
coordinator indicated (ATTN: Mr. Walter
Rohrbach, Intern, Consulate General of
Switzerland). Registrations are being
urged by or before June 27. It should
also be noted that all volunteers will
be asked to sign a 'Release and Waiver
of Liability' form. Neither Habitat for
Humanity nor the Consular Corps will be
liable in case of accident, bodily harm,
death or property damage. Each volunteer
will need his/her own insurance for such
occurrences (please see attachment, to
be filled in at a later date).
Registered volunteers will be kept
informed of planning details by the
coordinator in the months ahead.
Thank you in advance for helping to
making the Consular Corps' Habitat for
Humanity house building project a
complete success.
